The Family Rounders Cup

It started with rain. Halfway through the final of our family rounders tournament the paper scoresheet turned to mush and nobody could agree on the score. So I built the app we needed: four team captains log in, add players and submit results, and everyone gets a live league table, match history and bracket from their phone.

It's fully serverless because it gets used one day a year and shouldn't cost anything the other 364. Cognito handles the captains' logins, everything is defined in CloudFormation, and GitHub Actions deploys it with OIDC, so there are no long-lived keys.

This website

I built this site to show my cloud skills, not just list them. It's a private S3 bucket behind CloudFront with HTTPS from ACM, all written in CloudFormation and shipped by GitHub Actions. It wasn't all smooth. My domain lives outside Route 53, so I wired up certificate validation by hand without touching my email records. Then my first deploy was refused, because GitHub identifies my repo by numeric IDs rather than its name. The fix turned out to be one line, and I came away understanding exactly how GitHub and AWS learn to trust each other.

  • Operate a large-scale Hyper-V and failover-clustering estate, maintaining high availability for broadcast-critical services 24/7/365.
  • Senior escalation point in major incidents, diagnosing complex infrastructure and service failures under time pressure to restore service fast.
  • Supported delivery and validation of a hybrid AWS disaster recovery solution: EC2 hot-standby servers linked to on-premises infrastructure over Direct Connect, including failover testing of Windows services and SQL Server dependencies.
  • Built PowerShell automation for service management, restart workflows and patching, cutting manual effort and improving consistency.
  • Created Splunk searches and dashboards with webhook and Microsoft Teams alerting to speed up incident detection and response.
